Washington Patent of the Month – January 2021

Clean air is extremely important right now. Throughout this pandemic, we’ve all heard how stores and offices are implementing new filtration systems that provide better and cleaner air circulation. We’ve also heard how UV lights are being used to sanitize objects. But what about a system that can do both? That’s exactly what Aleddra Inc. has done. It’s developed an air-filtering, anti-bacterial lighting apparatus that combines light and air filtration systems to purify our air.

A translucent cover, a light source within, and an air circulation source makes up the bulk of Alledra’s lighting apparatus. Air is sucked in through an inflow port (a fan) and through the walls of the cover as it is made of air permeable material. The light inside activates the anti-bacterial photocatalytic coating the interior of the cover. This coating is made of titanium dioxide and kills any bacteria or viruses that touch it. So, as air passes in and out of the light apparatus, airborne bacteria and viruses are trapped and killed inside, providing clean air and enjoyable ambient lighting.

Are you developing new technology? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
