Washington Patent of the Month – July 2022

Vaccine manufacturing is no easy feat. These processes require the continuous production using a pathogenic organism with enough frequency to stockpile these biological products. Storage is complex as well – requiring stringent storage parameters including temperature and humidity. And once they are needed, they need to be transported, often across long-distances, to be delivered to those who need them.

Inventprise, LLC has recently patented a solution which allows for just-in-time manufacturing of biologicals. With this solution, small quantities of vaccines or similar biologicals can be mass produced near their endpoint, reducing transportation and the complexities of storage and manufacturing.

The hardware includes a:

  • Fermentation system,
  • Cross-flow system
  • Disposable formulation system
  • Robotic fill-finish system, and
  • Quality control test and release system.

The hardware may need to scale depending on the required yield, but does not need to consider mass production in terms of stockpiling. This allows the system to be built to match the nearby populations or the required number of doses rather than considering an entire nation’s population. This bioprocessing plant embodies the plug-and-play system, adapting to scale as needed.

Inventprise was founded in 2012 by Dr. Subhash Kapre with the goal of  improving global health. Growing from a small R&D lab to a clinical-stage biotech organization, this just-in-time bioprocessing plant is a step towards improved global health.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
