Washington Patent of the Month – June 2021
Extended Reality (XR) refers to all augmented, virtual, and mixed reality systems that work to provide additional layers to our experiences. They typically use biomechanical motion simulators to create a more engaging and immersive user experience. These systems have increased in popularity and function, working their way into video games, medical procedures, movies and more. As they advance in these fields, developers work harder to more accurately simulate real life. Board Media Group LLC has worked to further these XR systems by developing a realistic motion simulator.
The industry has seen some of these motion sensors, but most are cumbersome, imprecise, or rudimentary. For instance, video game controllers have used a “rumble” feature to simulate movement. Board Media Group’s motion sensor offers a more realistic experience without being cumbersome. Their system uses a motion sensing chair that can move in a few directions. The device receives motion input data to tilt the chair as needed. As the user navigates the virtual reality, for instance in a video game or flight simulator, the chair responds, moving the user to match the simulated movement. This motion sensor input would be calculated from the controller which could range depending on the application. For instance, in a flight simulator, the user could have a controller that matches the yoke in a plane. As they maneuver the yoke, a gyroscope tracks position, angle, and tilt and relays this to the chair which matches to provide a simulation of plane movement. With these biomechanical motion simulators, the XR system provides a more realistic simulation experience.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
