Washington Patent of the Month – June 2022

Rad Power Bikes, Inc. is North America’s largest ebike maker. The company started out when Mike Radenbaugh, the CEO and Founder, decided he needed to make his 15-mile ride to school easier. He tinkered around with his bike, soldering electronic parts together in an effort to ease his bike ride. Little did he know, this would be the beginning of 15 years of innovation. Now, Rad Power Bikes is laser-focused on redefining transportation at large.

Recently, the company patented their newly designed frame for an ebike with cargo holding. Cargo bicycles are popular vehicles for those who need to transport children or goods. With the growth of bike-based food delivery drivers, and the need for eco-friendly transportation, cargo bikes are seeing a rise in popularity.

The frame designed by Rad Power Bikes is adaptable and able to withstand heavy and varied loads while remaining fairly lightweight. The frame allows for both long-tail cargo and moped-style utility bikes. The elongated frame and lower center of gravity ensure the bike remains stable even when taking advantage of the full payload capacity. This is achieved using cross members which connect the rear rack to a head tube and then to a seat tube. The multiple connection points mitigate any side to side movement and stabilize the bike during motion.
