West Virginia Patent of the Month – July 2021

CSX trains are great at moving tons of freight at 400 miles per gallon of diesel. Modern diesel-electric train engines use electrical generators which provide power to the traction motors. The engine and wheels are not mechanically connected. AMT, Inc. has designed a power hybrid integrated management system (PHIMS) with a power interface to bring better fuel efficiency to a variety of transport vehicles.

This design uses similar principles of the hybrid diesel-electric locomotive and expands it to suit vehicles like cars, ATVs, motorcycles and more. The PHIMS power interface connects to an ultra capacitor, power source and a load with a controller. It selectively switches the circuit between the ultracapacitor and the power source based on the demand of the load. This keeps the ultra capacitor in charge at peak demands and power source in charge at steady demand. The fast charge and discharge energy storage uses the ultracapacitors to provide the same fuel efficiency seen in diesel-electric motors to any commercial vehicle. As an example – when starting a car, the vehicle needs a minimum revolution to build up enough torque initially to move the vehicle. With this invention, the ultracapacitor provides power to the motor in this stationary and accelerating state. It then switches the power generator to excess power, which then charges the ultra capacitor. When braking, the engine can be turned off and allows the regenerative power of braking can be charged back to the ultracapacitor. This provides amazing fuel and electric efficiency.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
