West Virginia Patent of the Month – June 2024

Mustang Sampling, LLC is all about accuracy in measurement. With this as their core focus, the company developed and scaled their Analytically Accurate® solutions. Now, the company has been granted a patent for a cryogenic liquid-based sampling system.

Designed to cater to the stringent requirements of natural gas and other cryogenic liquid industries, this system integrates cutting-edge technology to ensure accurate sampling and preservation of liquid samples in their pristine state.

At its core, the system features a chamber equipped with a specialized sample pump, meticulously engineered to extract cryogenic liquid samples directly from external sources such as pipelines. This capability is crucial for industries where precise analysis of liquefied natural gas (LNG), natural gas liquids (NGLs), and other cryogenic liquids is essential for energy valuation and quality control.

A key component of the Mustang Sampling system is its separate enclosure, strategically designed to maintain optimal conditions for sampling operations. This enclosure includes a supply port for introducing a controlled gas stream, crucial for regulating the sample pump’s stroke timing. The integration of a vacuum device further enhances operational efficiency by creating a vacuum within the chamber via a dedicated vacuum line, ensuring the preservation of sample integrity during extraction and transfer.

The system is bolstered by sophisticated processing circuitry, which orchestrates the interplay between the vacuum device, sample pump, and external composite liquid sample collection container. This orchestration is critical for maintaining a constant pressure within the collection container, thereby preventing phase changes in the liquid sample—a pivotal feature for accurate subsequent analysis.

For practical application, the system offers versatility and scalability, catering to various sampling needs across different liquid gas environments. Whether for LNG custody transfer, industrial process monitoring, or laboratory analysis, Mustang Sampling’s invention stands as a testament to innovation in cryogenic liquid handling technology.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
