West Virginia Patent of the Month – March 2025

AVN Corporation has introduced a novel catalyst support technology, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 12,251,686, titled “Catalyst supports—composition and process of manufacture.” This innovation promises to enhance efficiency in industrial chemical reactions, particularly in the production of ethylene oxide and hydrocarbon processing.

High-Purity Silicon Carbide Enhances Performance

The patented catalyst support comprises at least 95% silicon carbide (SiC), offering high thermal stability and mechanical strength. Its low surface area (≤10 m²/g) and minimal pore volume (≤1 cc/g) reduce unwanted side reactions, leading to improved selectivity and yield in catalytic processes.

Advanced Manufacturing Process

AVN’s method involves mixing fine SiC particles (0.1–20 microns) with silicon dioxide and carbonaceous materials to form an extrusion. This extrusion is then heated above 1400°C under inert atmospheres, followed by a carbon removal step below 1000°C. The result is a robust catalyst support suitable for high-temperature applications.

Broad Industrial Applications

This technology is applicable in various oxidation reactions, including the production of ethylene oxide, and endothermic reactions like paraffin dehydrogenation and hydrocarbon cracking. By enhancing catalyst performance, AVN’s innovation could lead to more efficient and cost-effective chemical manufacturing processes.
