Wisconsin Patent of the Month – April 2025
A newly patented plasma torch from RADOM Corporation could redefine industrial heating systems. The invention, titled High-power plasma torch with ignition detuning, U.S. Patent No. 12273988, introduces a method to stabilize and control high-temperature plasma more efficiently during both ignition and operation.
The device uses a cylindrical microwave cavity with adjustable metal plates. These plates shift the cavity’s internal shape, detuning it to favor quick plasma ignition, then retuning it for efficient long-term operation. This tunable approach minimizes energy loss and enhances control over extreme heat generation.
A unique spacer design inside the cavity adds a swirl to the incoming gas flow, improving plasma uniformity. The nozzle uses a compression-fit design, eliminating the need for threads and making it more resistant to thermal expansion. These changes improve reliability in harsh environments like waste treatment, metallurgy, or advanced manufacturing.
By combining electrical tuning with structural improvements, the design addresses long-standing challenges in industrial plasma systems. It enables longer operation times, reduces maintenance needs, and opens new possibilities for plasma-driven technologies.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
