BRAIN Initiative: Development, Optimization and Validation of Novel Tools and Technologies for Neuroscience Research (STTR) program provides funding to support the development of tools and technologies through Small Business Technology Transfer (SBTT). The program seeks to:
- Gain a better understanding of the dynamic activity of neural circuits
- Develop new, innovative tools to facilitate detailed analysis of complex circuits and provide insight into cellular interactions that underlie brain function
Priority is given to but are not excluded to the following topics:
- Large Scale Sensing Probes
- Imaging Instrumentation
- Large-Scale Recording of the development of Electrodes
- Techniques and Approaches to Recording Neural Activity
- Delivery of active agents to specific neurons without side effects
- Viral-mediated gene delivery improvements

Funds typically do not exceed $150,000 for Phase I projects and $1,000,000 for Phase II projects; however, budgets may be increased up to 50% with Congress approval. Applicants are encourage to contact the NIH program officials before proposing anything in excess of the guidelines.
