Georgia Patent of the Month – July 2021

Know Biological, Inc. is a life science company that combines software with the medical industry to advance detection and treatment opportunities. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder of the central nervous system. Two thirds of epilepsy patients can effectively control their seizures through medication – but the remaining third experience uncontrolled and unpredictable seizure episodes. Often, the unpredictability is a large consequence itself – taking away independence and causing anxiety. Know Biological has developed a seizure detection device which gathers data off a patient’s skin and providing a warning to the patient.

Their device collects volatile organic compounds from the patent’s skin. A heating element within the device emits a thermal pulse, desorbing the compounds from the collector material. These compounds are then run through a gas chromatography column, separating them into their separate chemicals and analyzed by a processor. Certain organic compounds are known to indicate a seizure, These compounds rise in the pre-seizure stage, and can appear in different concentrations depending on the individual’s blood chemistry. This pre-seizure phase can appear anywhere from 5 to 40 minutes before a seizure occurs, giving a warning to the patient. This gives the patient a chance to sit down or get off the road, getting themselves into a safe position or calling for help beforehand. Removing that sense of unpredictability gives patients with epilepsy more control over their own life again.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
