State Credit Name: Taxpayer’s Research and Development Expenses; modified by Act No.39 of House Bill 4362
Expiration Date: Permanent for C-Corporations. December 31, 2011 for flow-through entities with no “certificated credit”
Who Can Apply? Corporations and flow-through entities for tax years prior to 2011. Only C-Corporations after January 1, 2012.
Credit Carry Forward: Unlimited carry forward for all entities prior to 2011. Unlimited carry forward for C-Corporations only after January 1, 2012.
About the Credit:
The Michigan research credit adopted the federal research credit, so if a taxpayer qualifies for the federal credit, they will qualify for the state credit as well. A taxpayer may claim a 1.9% credit of the QRE’s acquired in Michigan in that taxable year.
Notes: The Michigan research credit combined with the total credit allowed under section 403 cannot exceed 65% of the tax due.
