Alabama Patent of the Month – July 2021

Every township, municipality, and big city needs a proper wastewater management system. These systems involve monitoring and proper urban structuring to best utilize a city’s limited resources. Monitoring in pipes and sewers can have some serious challenges, as the system itself operates in corrosive atmospheres. Some methods use ultrasonic sensors – but if the layout involves reflective structures and a cluttered set up, these sensors may be ineffective. ADS, LLC. has designed an improved water level monitoring system which works effectively in unreachable and unattended locations.

This level sensor measures the depth of water or fluid in a sewer chamber. Their system uses an ultrasonic transducer to emit signals which measure the liquid below. A second transducer detects the signal reflected from the surface. A timer is connected to the system and tracks the time interval between signal emission and return echo detection for use in calculating the water level. Their system uses a parabolic reflector to enhance the accuracy of measurements. The reflector is designed to direct the ultrasonic emissions from the transducer to the surface with a linear beam while simultaneously minimizing the beam spread. Since their design uses a narrow ultrasonic beam, the limited spread allows for accurate measurements in the confined space of a sewer chamber. This enhanced design allows for measurements to be taken even at unattended sites, increasing the efficiency of water monitoring throughout the sewage system.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
