Arkansas Patent of the Month – March 2022

Duke Technologies, LLC is an international provider and developer of advanced technologies for the refining and processing of alternative fuels. Duke Technologies’ headquarters and research facilities are located in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and include four pilot plants and an extensive analytical testing lab. Pilot plant tests are conducted for process plant design applications as well as ongoing research and development. Our analytical testing lab supports pilot plant and research activities by providing the product analyses required.

Renewable diesel feedstocks (eg. corn oil, cooking oil etc.) which have not been pretreated contain many components that can be detrimental to hydroprocessing reactors used to produce renewable diesel. This can lead to serious plugging problems within the reactors. As a result, nearly all feedstocks must be pretreated prior to processing into renewable diesel. Unfortunately, these pretreatment methods are often expensive and difficult to conduct.

Duke Technologies has recently developed a new solution for treating these renewable feedstocks. In this solution, a renewable feedstock containing oxygen and contaminants is introduced into a reactor at a specific flow velocity. The feedstock is heated within the reactor to remove the contaminants, forming a reactor product which is then cooled. Non-condensable gasses, metals, and water are separated and removed from the cooled reactor product to form a final product. This process has reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to traditional methods, and treats renewable feedstocks with greater ease.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
