California Patent of the Month – November 2021

A geofence is a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area and can be dynamically generated or made to match a predefined set of boundaries. Just like a real fence, these create separation between a location and the area around it. One common application is to allow advertisers to send targeted messages to those users who enter their area but can be applied to a wide range of industries.

GeoFrenzy, Inc. is a technology company who focuses on developing solutions for creating and governing the Spatial Internet including drones, virtual worlds, autonomous vehicles, smartphones and more. As part of this mission, GeoFrenzy developed a registration mapping toolkit for geofences in an effort to expand the governing and applicability of the virtual realm.

Their system creates a database of geofences, each of which is associated with demographic designators which are then associated with IP addresses. The geographic designators use real property boundaries. In addition to the creation of the geofence database, GeoFrenzy created a system that finds a geofence in the geofence database including location and additional information (eg. geofence owner).

As an example, an application that monitors geofences may have these defined polygons of fenced data such as boundaries of a city and of schools, parks, and buildings within that city. A user could search for a specific park within that city, and the application could search for and identify this region of interest. You can see how this can be applicable to so many applications such as those similar to Google Maps, Uber, and more.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
