Colorado Patent of the Month – September 2022

Thousands of people around the world experience chronic pain due to a variety of injuries. This may include nociceptive pain, which is pain caused by damage to body tissue, or neuropathic pain, which is pain caused by damage or injury to the nerves in the body. These types of pain are typically treated with pharmaceutical drugs, like opioids, that often come with side effects and can become addictive. Alternative treatments like psychological therapies, acupuncture, or massage are only mildly effective in treating chronic pain.

Sana Health, Inc. (Sana Health) is focused on providing chronic pain sufferers with a non-pharmaceutical treatment device that is effective and easy to use. They intend to stimulate the brain’s natural wave frequencies, which includes delta, alpha, beta and theta waves, to modulate the way the brain perceives pain severity.

Sana Health’s novel development consists of a small headset, similar to a sleeping mask, that contains headphones and built-in lighting technology to deliver auditory and visual stimulation to both the left and right ears and eyes. The device generates pulses with sinusoidal components that correspond with brain wave frequencies ranging from 0.25 to 4.25 Hz. It provides sequential segments of auditory sounds, vibrations, and visual stimuli such as light outputs to essentially force communication between the left and right sides of the brain. This stimulation can normalize the oscillations of brain waves and reduce chronic pain. The treatment lasts anywhere between 2 to16 minutes per day, making it a convenient option to fit into anyone’s routine.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
