Delaware Patent of the Month – March 2021

Chordae tendineae, or the heart strings, play vital roles in the functioning of the heart. Blood flows through the heart in a set direction. If your heart valves are unable to firmly close, blood may flow backwards in the heart. This problem is called mitral valve regurgitation (MR). When a patient faces MR, heart string replacement may be required. Pipeline Medical Technologies has developed a methodology for transvascular replacement of chordae tendineae with prosthetics.

Through their methodology, a delivery catheter enters the left atrium and secures an anchor suture in the ventricular wall. A second anchor suture is made on the mitral annulus. These sutures are connected to form a prosthetic chord. They work to limit the movement range of the mitral leaflets. These attached sutures are able to regulate valve closing and prevent MR from continuing. The final steps involve properly tensioning the replacement chord so that blood flow is optimal and not restricted.
