Georgia Patent of the Month – April 2021

Micro and nanoscale pollutants are difficult to filter out of water systems. Pesticides are a common problem with filtration systems, as they often make it through in high concentrations. This is especially an issue in natural water systems, as pesticides can be transferred through the soil into nearby rivers or lakes and impact plants and animals along the way. Innovative Water Care, LLC (Sigura) has been working on an improved water treatment system which specifically aims at removing pesticides from wastewater.

Sigura’s system feeds wastewater to an electrolysis cell which oxidizes the stream. The effluent is recirculated through the electrolysis cell and eventually directed out as a product stream. Their analysis shows a 95% pesticide removal rate. This is meant as an additional step, where the wastewater still undergoes other filtration methods to remove large detritus and residues. Electrolytic oxidation is known to degrade compounds into CO2 and H2O. This process also does not produce sludge which reduces upkeep and maintenance associated with other pesticide filtration systems. This filtration system works effectively with high concentrations of pesticides, and offers a more environmentally friendly filtration method.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
