Kansas Patent of the Month – April 2021
Law enforcement often use video footage in legal proceedings. However, these systems usually lack capabilities such as authenticating that it has not been altered, poor video quality leading to missing identification of objects or people, and so on. Digital Ally, Inc. wants to make these tools more efficient and capable by augmenting video data with presence data.
Their method augments video data with presence data taken from proximity tags. A proximity tag reader is attached to the recording system and receives proximity tag identifiers. As video is recorded, the proximity tag reader analyzes objects and stores this information as metadata attached to the video. This metadata is stored as an encoded frame within the video and offers an authenticated set of proximity and identification data for use in law enforcement proceedings.
To put this system in perspective, the video imaging devices could be body camera attached to law enforcement officers. If one officer appears in the video captured by another officer, the first officer’s proximity tag will be read by the second officer’s proximity tag identifier. The video now has coded information that the first officer is in the video for solid identification purposes. This would extend to vehicle-mounted cameras as well. The tags stored in each video, along with time frame data would also allow video footage from different officers, who appear in eachother’s videos, to be marked as connected and easily referenced. This simple inclusion of metadata improves the quality of video evidence and offers instant authentication.
