Louisiana Patent of the Month – December 2023
RheoVest, LLC has made a name for itself, developing products that meet the needs of those in the oil and gas industry. Recently, the company has been granted a patent for their approach to pumping foamed fluids into well bores.
Foams and similar liquid-gas mixtures are meant to reduce hydrostatic pressure in the subterranean formations across oil and gas well drilling, well completions, and various remediations. Unfortunately, most existing foam mixtures require intricate mixing and pumping technologies to maintain the high pressure side of the pump. RheoVest’s solution uses a pumping method that reduces fluid densities, creating greater efficiency and expanding the utility of the foaming mixture.
The company achieves this by introducing a gas into the liquid early in the mixing and pumping process. A series of positive displacement pumps are then used to increase the pressure of the mixture before it is pumped into the subterranean space. These displacement pumps prevent fluid slippage, prevent liquid-gas separation, and create a consistent positive discharge pressure. By introducing this low pressure gas into the liquid while it flows between pumps, the gas is trapped and cannot escape to the atmosphere. This requires it to homogenize with the liquid and provides support in the pressure increase.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
