Maryland Patent of the Month – August 2021

RoosterBio, Inc. aims to bring a new light to regenerative medicine, by simplifying the use of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells and EVs. Regenerative medicine is limited by the cost and availability of cellular materials that the researchers need to perform experiments and clinical trials. RoosterBio has developed a method to produce these cellular materials in “ready to use” formats.

The method developed by RoosterBio is specifically capable of producing mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) but is broad enough to develop a range of living cells. MSCs are of particular interest as they readily generate single-cell derived colonies. The formulations developed maintain the cells in high viability and functional states. The growing method cultures MSCs in complete mediums, hanging drops, or non-adherent dishes. This culturing process has two stages. The first stage is long enough to provide a sufficient number of cells for further culturing. The second uses conditions to promote the formation of spheroidal aggregates of the cells. They are then delivered in tissue engineering or cells using hydrogels or water-containing hels. These gels must be biocompatible and facilitative of migration and differentiation. These conditions help to maintain the “printability” of hydrogels. This method produces and distributes ready to use cellular materials to enhance the speed of regenerative medicine research, removing a major industry limitation.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
