Maryland Patent of the Month – December 2021

Visual search patterns can be used to indicate a person’s cognition in certain situations. For instance, an expert soccer player might look at a kicker’s hip to determine and react to the direction the ball will go, before contact is even made. A novice soccer player would look at the ball, resulting in slower and less accurate reaction time. By tracking where the individual looks, we can learn a lot about their skill level. This same premise can be applied to a variety of scenarios, from law enforcement responding to an emergency to players of a sport.

RightEye, LLC. has developed a system to evaluate human eye movement, tracking and scoring the individual’s eye movements. This information can be used to recommend training tasks for the individual to help improve their visual search and cognition in their specific field.

The system tracks the user’s eye movement before, during, and after performing a task and identifies a temporal phase or biomechanical phase of the task performed. The system then identifies a visual cue within the temporal or biomechanical phase and scores the tracking of the eyes by comparing eye location data to the visual cue. The eye tracking is achieved by a wearable device composed of cameras and remote cameras, all set to track eye movement by tracking the movement of the pupil or iris.

RightEye’s system provides a solution for both healthcare and wellness. It can be applied to anything from professional scenarios (eg. law enforcement, athletics) to rehabilitation scenarios.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
