Michigan Patent of the Month – December 2023
ENDRA Life Sciences, Inc. is ushering in a new era for ultrasound technology. The company is set on combining energy and ultrasound to stimulate tissue and see whole new dimensions. In line with this, the company has been granted a patent for their thermoacoustic probe.
Thermoacoustic imaging often uses high frequency systems, like electromagnetic waves, to image tissue. However, existing systems have been limited to lab testing and have not fared well in a clinical setting. That’s where ENDRA Life Sciences’ thermoacoustic probe comes in.
The probe is designed to support easy, handheld use in a real-world scenario. A radio-frequency (RF) applicator and electromagnetic layer are combined, along with an acoustic matching layer, to deliver specific radio frequencies and ultrasound waves. The system connects to conventional ultrasound to measure permittivity. Radio frequencies (RF) stimulate tissue and create small sonic waves that are picked up and decoded by their proprietary algorithms.
Currently, ENDRA Life Sciences’ technology is being directed towards measurement of fat in the liver for the early detection of liver disease. The probe delivers Thermo-Acoustic Enhanced UltraSound and is marketed as TAEUS®. It offers a non-invasive approach to imaging and allows clinicians to measure steatosis in less than a minute.
While currently in use for liver disease, ENDRA Life Sciences’ sees potential far beyond a single application. Their hope is to expand TAEUS® to visualize tissue temperature and function, helping guide procedures that treat conditions such as cancer and atrial fibrillation, or help identify arterial plaque and internal bleeding.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
