Mississippi Patent of the Month – January 2022
Greywater Industries, LLC was formed with the intention of addressing the growing global critical water problems. Greywater refers to the domestic wastewater we generate from non-toilet systems. For instance, the water going down your drain in a shower is greywater. It needs to be treated to remove chemicals before being sent back out into the environment or else we risk contamination and chemical spread.
Existing natural biological filtration processes cannot hold up against the sheer quantity of manure used in farms. These processes cannot effectively reduce ammonia content to the extent needed to release greywater. Man-made systems are typically too costly or laborious to make obtaining greywater from manure worthwhile.
Greywater Industries decided it’s time we stop ignoring this greywater source and developed a system which can be implemented with less cost and labor requirements. Their system can be implemented after the solid and liquid components of animal waste are separated. It uses a biological filtration system which processes the liquid portion using a microbial culture. The solid fraction can be repurposed as fertilizer or bio-gas etc.
The liquid portion first goes into a settling tank, where particles can settle at the bottom. The liquid is passed by a pump into the bio-filter subsystem. This subsystem has two bio-filters, each of which have a facilitating material such as stone or porous minerals and a microbial population. This first bio-filter system causes the biological decomposition of ammonia into byproducts. The second bio-filter reduces the byproducts further, decomposing them into nitrogen. Their system can effectively treat 7900 gallons of hog manure liquid waste per day. It can also be scaled to match the size of your farm.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
