New Hampshire Patent of the Month – December 2022

Food loss and waste is a growing problem in our modern society. From individual families throwing away food waste to grocery stores and restaurants discarding leftovers and “ugly” food. In 2014 alone, more than 38 million tons of food waste was generated, with only five percent diverted from landfills and incinerators.

Food loss has a significant environmental impact. Rotting food creates methane gas – an incredibly potent greenhouse gas. The food is grown, processed, packaged, and transported. All of this requires oil, water, and resources which are wasted when the food is discarded. BioGreen 360, Inc. is developing a solution meant to transform food waste, reducing the environmental impact and supporting our environment.

Their solution is a waterless, closed-loop system capable of digesting a broad range of organic feedstocks. A hopper is positioned to receive organic waste. An agitator and grinding plate at the bottom helps to break apart and liquefy the waste. Microbes can accelerate this breakdown on larger scale applications. The liquified waste is then dehydrated and dried.

The final product is transformed into an inert material and repurposed into premium organic fertilizer. Extending life beyond the point of discarding food helps to build a circular economy, where waste is reused.

The system requires no clean water and expels no gray water, ensuring processing food waste will not require more intensive water treatment processes. This translates to millions of gallons being saved and zero gallons being reintroduced into existing waste streams. The solutions circular technology and water-free system can effectively eliminate 100% of your food waste and reduce your carbon footprint by up to 80%.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
