New Jersey Patent of the Month – March 2021

Sarcopenia is a form of muscle loss that results from aging or immobility. Reduced muscle percent contributes to falls which can be deadly to elderly people. It can be managed to some extent with exercise and diet. Some treatments use testosterone to increase muscle power and function but this brings many unwanted side effects. Research has demonstrated that improved muscle health is associated with improved longevity, faster recovery, better quality of life and better outcomes for many serious illnesses. This research has guided MYOS RENS Technology, Inc. in their path of developing advanced nutrition products to address muscle health.

They have developed an egg yolk powder based treatment to help improve muscle health and treat sarcopenia. Fortetropin is found in fertilized chicken egg yolks. This compound has been shown to increase the rate of muscle protein synthesis. Fortetropin reduces myostatin levels which is known to either inhibit muscle growth or promote muscle cell death. Reducing these levels allows muscle to continue to be produced and prevents extensive muscle loss.
