New Mexico Patent of the Month – January 2021

Everyone knows the dreaded word “Salmonella.” We all try our best to avoid it and the food poisoning it can cause. We read the news and pay attention to food recalls in grocery stores. But did you know that you can also get salmonella from pet food? Pet food, like kibble, is made of meat, seafood, and feed grains and their by-products. These ingredients or the pet food factories can become contaminated with Salmonella since these facilities often don’t have adequate heat and moisture control. Animals, such as dogs, don’t often show signs of Salmonella or food poisoning since they’re pretty resistant to digestive pathogens. However, when we handle the food by filling up their bowls, or even hand feeding our pets, we can get sick. That’s why New Mexico based Nevada Naturals, Inc. has developed a new method of reducing any Salmonella present in kibble.

Nevada Naturals’ method uses emulsifying agents and surfactants with preservatives to cover kibble and inhibit the growth of pathogens, such as Salmonella. Some of those agents include lecithin, and glycerin and sucrose monoesters of fatty acids, which can penetrate the fatty coating on kibble (usually poultry fat and flavouring) and reach the Salmonella that wasn’t killed in the manufacturing process. Nevada Naturals also uses preservatives, such as sorbates, nitrates, sulfites, etc. that can further control pathogen growth. Their method has a Salmonella reduction rate of 99% and is effective for a minimum of 60 days after coating.

Are you developing a new process? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
