Aquaculture systems often recirculate the water and other components in the aqueous medium to promote growth and health of the fish. However, this recirculation can lead to increased gas concentrations of carbon dioxide, and nitrogen while the fish deplete the Oxygen supply. For the health of the fish, removing or controlling the level of these gases is essential.
Searen, LLC has focused on water quality since their inception. The company was founded to bring to life the potential of a vacuum air lift system in water treatment. Since then, the company has been innovating solutions that serve the aquaculture industry.
Recently, they have expanded on this vacuum airlift technology, incorporating a photobioreactor to filter out these build up gases and enhance water quality. Their Vacuum Airlift™ (VAL™) uses a vacuum to power an airlift pump which pulls the water up for recirculation. The VAL transitions to a photobioreactor which can replace a traditional secondary through quaternary sewage management process with a single, simple, and efficient process. An external tube containing nutrients and contaminants flows into the photobioreactor. This flow, plus sunlight, and CO2 produced by algae can produce biomass and oxygen. Bacteria using this oxygen can then break down compounds in the waste stream. This means the dissolved CO2 is used up, the nitrogen is broken down, and the oxygen is increased.
With this technology in place, Recirculating Aquaculture Systems can have reliable water quality management and ultimately healthier fish.
