Oklahoma Patent of the Month – April 2024

XRG Technologies, LLC is bringing ‘clean’ and ‘combustion’ together by developing innovative heat transfer technology that enables the industry to achieve its energy efficiency and environmental stewardship goals. The company has recently been granted a patent for an emission reducing solution in fired process heaters.

Imagine a device that not only tackles the pressing issue of nitrogen oxide emissions but also enhances heat transfer efficiency in fired process heaters. This innovative solution marks a significant stride towards a cleaner, more efficient future in industrial settings.

Traditionally, reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from combustion processes has been a challenging task. However, XRG Technologies developed a device that not only addresses this challenge but also revolutionizes heat transfer mechanisms within fired process heaters. This device comprises several key components that work in harmony to achieve remarkable results.

At the heart of this invention lies the flue gas entrainment unit, strategically positioned to interact with the radiant section of the fired process heater. Through a meticulously designed fluid flow path, fuel is entrained with flue gas from the radiant section, forming an entrained mixture that is crucial for both emissions reduction and enhanced heat transfer.

The company has also incorporated ductwork and a venturi eductor into their device to further optimize performance. These components create a closed circuit for fluid flow, ensuring efficient recirculation of gases within the system. By utilizing a secondary fluid, such as steam, the venturi eductor boosts fluid flow through the entrainment unit, enhancing its effectiveness.

What sets this invention apart is its comprehensive approach to emissions reduction and heat transfer optimization. Not only does it effectively reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, but it also addresses issues such as flame stability, fouling, and heat maldistribution within fired process heaters. By tackling these challenges simultaneously, XRG Technologies is paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient industrial landscape.

The versatility of this invention is noteworthy. It can be retrofitted onto existing equipment, offering a cost-effective solution for industries looking to improve their environmental footprint without the need for complete equipment replacement. This accessibility makes it a compelling option for the 135 operating refineries in the United States alone, as well as countless other industrial facilities worldwide.
