South Carolina Patent of the Month – November 2022

Some medical implants are designed to stay in the body for a limited time before being removed. Unfortunately, this requires two medical procedures or leaving the implant indefinitely. The latter option is only possible if the implant won’t cause harm when present long-term. Poly-Med, Inc. has tackled this issue by developing biodegradable implants.

Their solution comprises medical implants made with a biodegradable material that degrades in the human body. In order to ensure the implant lasts as long as needed within the body before degrading, the implant is surrounded by a containment layer which is constructed based on the desired lifespan. In addition, purposefully placed imperfections can allow the degradation to be controlled, guaranteeing it initiates in one spot and expands from there. This technology ensures patients can receive the healing and treatment needed without agitating the site with further procedures. After use, they resorb within the body without a trace, minimizing the need for follow up surgical procedures.

Poly-Med has been developing innovative and bioresorbable solutions for over 25 years. They were founded with a mission which guides them to this day: to design and develop custom biotechnology materials to propel specialty product visions into tangible, highly-competitive, and unique product offerings.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
