South Carolina Patent of the Month – October 2021
Nonverbal communication has become an incredibly common part of our daily lives, from texting to social media and more. Along with this completely nonverbal communication comes a limitation in our expression. Some online communities have created methods to get their emotion or expression across. For Instance, it’s common to see “/s” on Reddit when your sentence is meant to be sarcastic. However, these unique descriptors are different in various communities and require the user to learn the particulars for different communities.
Without being able to infer the intended expression easily, text-only communication can lead to lots of miscommunications and misinterpretations. Of course there are emojis but these cannot always convey the range of human emotion that we can portray in real life and are often applied differently by different people. Expressy, LLC has tackled this challenge, creating a computerized method to convey emotion.
The text is enhanced with an emotional preset using “kinetic text”. This could mean anything from increased font size to convey excitement to wobbly lines to convey uncertainty. It conveys emotions including happy, sad, angry, frustrated, sarcasm and more. The typist simply selects the emotional preset of interest, and the computer applies it to the text. Adding emotion back into our main communication is sure to prevent us from taking things the wrong way, improving our communication with a standardized format.
