Tennessee Patent of the Month – November 2021

Surgeons often have to make large incisions in order to create enough space for surgical instruments and their hands to effectively complete the procedure. These incisions have scars and lengthy recovery times. With these drawbacks, both surgeons and surgical tech developers have been determinedly working towards minimally invasive surgical techniques. One key aspect to these minimally invasive techniques is maintaining visual access to the patient’s surgical site.

Camplex, Inc. has designed a surgical visualization system. The device has a display screen to provide visualization for the surgeon as well as integrated cameras. The cameras are positioned to capture multiple angles of the surgical site which can be displayed separately or stitched together for a comprehensive image. The entire device has three arms which can be positioned as needed. The arms support:

  • Viewing platform
    • This platform has two oculars which can be configured to a standard surgical microscope viewing platform. The surgeon can adjust the position of the microscope cameras without moving the oculars.
  • Display device
    • Touchscreen display with control options
  • Imaging system
    • Provides electronic microscope-like view of the work site

The device receives images from cameras on surgical instruments – which may be minimally invasive – and returns the images to the display screen. In this way, the surgeon can continue to perform complex procedures without losing visibility.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
