Texas Patent of the Month – September 2021
Neosensory, Inc. builds non-invasive brain-machine interfaces to create new senses. This can be used to help those with missing or limited senses such as hearing loss, or expanding anyone’s horizons and allowing them to experience reality on another level. Their most recent invention uses haptic simulation to help provide information that those suffering from hearing loss might miss. Haptics is the science and technology of transmitting and understanding information through touch. The “touch” sense is already known to help people with hearing loss have more immersive experiences. For instance, they might use touch feedback to improve an interaction with video games or at a concert.
Neosensory developed a way to integrate haptic stimulation into their system. At its core, the system receives audio information, processes it, and outputs haptic feedback. The feedback involves vibration released at certain locations and intensities using haptic actuators. The user then feels the vibratory feedback. The audio information is processed through a series of environment-specific algorithms which allows the haptic feedback to be tailored to whatever scenario is needed. In this design, Neosensory uses a watch or bracelet look, so the user feels the haptic stimulation on their sensitive wrist. It can be used to feel voices, laughter, emergency sounds, music, or even doorbells. Much of our world has been designed with fully able-bodied people in mind. Innovations like this help to open the world up to those who may have previously felt excluded.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
