Alabama Patent of the Month – May 2023

As electric motorcycles grow in popularity, the demand for cost-effective and adaptive designs has increased. Curtiss Motorcycle Company is meeting this demand with innovative designs and parts. Recently, the company has designed and patented a swing arm configuration manufactured with fewer mechanical components, reducing the overall weight and cost.

Their swing arm configuration includes a singular shaft that serves as the swing arm pivot and drive shaft, connected to a housing supported by a chassis and a power source that supplies power to an electric motor. The motor transfers power through the shaft to a swing arm assembly connected to the rear wheel.

One advantage of this configuration is that it eliminates the need for excess materials that are typically used to support both the swing arm and motor in conventional motorcycles. This design also reduces the number of mechanical components and makes maintenance easier. In addition, since the power source can be housed within a bullet-shaped enclosure, the motorcycle can be designed with more aesthetic appeal. The front wheel and chassis can also be variably spaced to suit anyone’s preference.

The company is set on merging engineering and aesthetics to create luxury electric motorcycles. They pride themselves on designing motorcycles that not only function exquisitely, but draw the attention of any passersby with their gorgeous frames. The invention of a novel swing arm configuration by the Curtiss Motorcycle Company could make electric motorcycles more cost-effective and easier to maintain, bringing more enthusiasts to the industry.
