Arizona Patent of the Month – February 2022

Chances are, if you’ve ever used a UV-based teeth whitening system, you thought about how to clean the mouth guard or tray. In most cases, the instructions direct you to clean it with a toothbrush to remove any residual gel or compounds. Unfortunately, in most cases this will not completely remove the bacteria. If not cleaned properly, the mouthpiece can grow bacteria which could lead to infection in the mouth during the next use.

ForeSold, LLC has developed a self-disinfecting teeth whitening device that takes advantage of the existing UV lights. Their tool uses UV light to perform the whitening process. ForeSold realized they could utilize the existing components of a teeth whitener and take advantage of the properties of UV light which has been proven effective against bacteria, viruses, mold and mildew. When sterilizing, the device uses an additional UV light source in order to direct light onto 100% of the mouth guard surface.

The mouthguard must be docked in the container during cleaning as a safety precaution. This ensures the user cannot look at the device when the UV light is activated, in order to protect their eyes. A sensor within the device determines if the device is in the container and prevents the disinfection protocol from activating if the device is not securely docked and closed in. We all want white teeth, but we do not want infections, and with this new design, we don’t have to worry about them.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
