Arizona Patent of the Month – September 2021

Electrosurgery uses RF electrosurgical units (ESU) and handpieces with electrodes to provide high frequency alternation radio frequency current inputs. These are used at various voltages to cut or coagulate tissue. These handpieces are either monopolar or bipolar. Monopolar (single electrode) devices are more common despite the excess heat generation which can lead to greater tissue damage. Bipolar (two electrodes) devices allow the use of lower voltages but have limited ability to cut and coagulate large bleeding areas. I.C. Medical, Inc. has designed an electrosurgical pencil that has the best of both devices with less limitations.

Their ultrapolar telescopic electrosurgery pencil is capable of performing precise cutting at the surgical site, as well as cutting and coagulation of large bleeding areas. The telescope allows for enhanced visibility at the surgical site when the telescope and blade are both extended. The device is made of a handpiece with a hollow telescopic part and an electrosurgery blade with both active and return contacts. A smoke evacuation channel is also positioned within the handpiece and is in communication with the interior of the hollow telescopic part. This takes the precision seen in monopolar devices and the lower voltages of bipolar devices to achieve the most effective ESU possible. The smoke evacuation channel draws smoke out of the surgical site to further improve the surgeons visibility and precision. I.C. Medical is known for their surgical smoke evacuation devices, so combining their proprietary knowledge with the ceramic electrode blade ensures a great surgical tool.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
