California Patent of the Month – June 2022

Exposure to radiation can become dangerous if done so excessively. Excessive UV radiation can lead to cancer, but knowing you have reached the point of excess exposure is not always easy. Tanning too long or spending a whole day outside can lead to sunburn, and if repeatedly exposed to these levels, a person might experience long term negative effects.

IngenioSpec, LLC are pioneers in the electronic eyewear marketplace. In their opinion, glasses which simply enhance or protect vision are not capitalizing on the true potential of a pair of glasses. Based on this, the company has designed a set of glasses with monitoring capabilities so that they can track both radiation exposure and motion.

By tracking motion, the eyewear can determine if the glasses are being worn or simply set down somewhere. The radiation tracking can measure a range of exposures including UV, infrared, and light. The sensors are positioned on the inside of the temple. The exposure is tracked by an internal circuitry system. If the motion sensor determines the glasses are being worn when a radiation threshold is reached a warning sound or a visual cue is triggered.

The radiation detection extends beyond letting you know if you’ve had too much sun for the day. Radiation comes in many forms and all are important to track. For instance, the detector could also help determine if you’ve been exposed to too much x-ray radiation and so on. If an x-ray technician is over-exposed, they can be alerted and can then decide whether to continue with their activities or take appropriate protective measures.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
