Colorado Patent of the Month – August 2021

Those who like to ski and snowboard know the importance of wax to reduce friction. This lubricating wax is applied to the bottom of the board or ski to help it glide across the snow, reducing dry, wet, and electrostatic friction. Most of these waxes are made from petroleum-derived materials including paraffin and microcrystalline wax. These materials are often made with fluorocarbons – carcinogenic “forever chemicals”. MountainFlow Eco-Wax LLC has changed the game, with a new formula for an eco-friendly wax that matches performance abilities.

They have created various formulas which combine three different waxes. The bulk of it (34-59%) comes from one of the following:

  • Candelilla wax
  • Carnauba wax
  • Rice Bran wax
  • Castor Wax

The second comes from one of the following, and ranges between 27-37% of the composition:

  • Sunflower wax
  • Bayberry wax
  • Palm wax
  • Jojoba wax

And finally, the third (15-20%) cines from:

  • Pillar blend soy wax
  • Palm wax
  • Natural vegetable wax
  • Japan wax
  • Stearic acid

This combination provides sufficient lubrication on snow surfaces. Depending on the three waxes selected, additional components such as antioxidants might be included. Melted, mixed and cooled together, the product is easy to apply to the snow equipment and performs just as well as petroleum products – without the harsh environmental impact.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses?
