Connecticut Patent of the Month – August 2022

Spine Wave, Inc. have been committed to providing spine surgeons with the tools and devices they need to reduce the invasive nature of surgery and improve surgical outcomes. Better surgical outcomes means the patient will lead a more active, productive, and pain-free life post procedure. As a part of this mission, the company has designed a spinal stabilization system with cross connectors that improve the freedom and motion while still providing rigidity.

Cross connectors are commonly used in spinal surgeries, providing a source of transverse rigidity in spinal stabilization rods. These connectors are traditionally fastened to two parallel connecting rods and span across the spine. Unfortunately, they can be clumsy to place and are limited in their orientation and placement. They need to accommodate misaligned spinal curvatures. Spine Wave’s design overcomes these limitations, providing more degrees of freedom by connecting an elongated connecting rod to a bone screw in the existing spinal stabilization system.

Their head to head cross connector and spinal stabilization system spans between successive vertebrae. The connectors provide an anchor point to connect each vertebra to the system. A spring-based adjustment mechanism is used to create some friction, holding the cross connectors in the desired position while still allowing for pivoting and articulation. Spine Wave has a wide range of products to meet the needs of varying applications, from posterior to cervical needs.
