Connecticut Patent of the Month – January 2022

Recent studies have shown that abnormal expression patterns of microRNA can be detected in patients with cancer. This could offer a new diagnostic method using biomarkers and may even provide earlier detection than existing methods. Existing attempts at using biomarkers to diagnose cancer are limited by the incredible variation in biomarker expression. As such, their results are not reliable. Liquid Lung, Dx. has strived to improve the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of pulmonary diseases – including lung cancer.

Recently, the company has developed a method that effectively uses biomarkers to diagnose lung cancer. The method can be used to diagnose lung cancer, determine a predisposition to lung cancer, or even a prognosis. This is achieved by determining the amount of one or more biomarkers (from a list of 29) in a patient and then comparing this amount to a reference. In addition to these biomarkers, a series of nucleic acids, proteins, or peptides are also evaluated. The amount is determined by testing a serum sample from the patient. The variation between the base value and patient sample can then indicate if a patient is healthy, has cancer, or has a higher potential for future diagnosis.

For instance, if a sample shows a high presence of one or more of these 29 biomarkers, the patient can be diagnosed with lung cancer. The degree of biomarker presence can indicate how far along the cancer is – from precancer to late stages. This provides a reliable, and accurate, screening method to identify cancer in patients at earlier stages.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
