Connecticut Patent of the Month – January 2023

Dexmedetomidine, also known as PRECEDEX®, is a prescription medication commonly used as a sedative during surgical procedures. While effective at sedation, it has some limitations: it can only be administered in a healthcare facility, the dose cannot be easily titrated for individual patients, and it has significant sedative properties.

BioXcel Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company utilizing artificial intelligence, has recently reconfigured the use of dexmedetomidine, taking advantage of its anti-agitation capabilities while limiting its sedative properties. The company ventured down this pathway to address the unmet need for a non-addictive anti-agitation medication, using AI to reduce therapeutic development costs and potentially accelerate timelines

This development takes the form of an oral film and effectively treats agitation. The self-supporting, dissolvable film contains dexmedetomidine, water-soluble polymers, and pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. The film is formulated to release dexmedetomidine rapidly, allowing for quick anti-agitation relief for patients without significant sedation.

The film can be self-administered, providing effective anti-agitation relief within minutes. In addition, the new oral film formulation eliminates the limitations of other forms of administering dexmedetomidine, such as sublingual tablets and oral sprays, which have issues with dose accuracy, swallowing of the drug, and cardiovascular side effects.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
