Connecticut Patent of the Month – September 2020

Connecticut company Life Warmer, is saving trauma patients by doing exactly that: warming lives. The company just received a patent for its portable infusion fluid heater, which allows medical staff to treat trauma patients with hypothermia.

Hypothermia occurs when the body’s core temperature drops below 35C (95F). And often, ambient intravenous (IV) fluid temperatures are a contributing factor, especially in trauma patients. And, while infusion fluid heaters exist, they’re often made up of many tubes and heaters, which are bulky and can damage the red blood cells as they move the blood.

So, Life Warmer developed its Quantum Fluid Warmer, a system that is portable, battery powered, and also allows for blood and fluids to be administered at one time. The system is the first of its kind to warm the blood in 24 seconds, and be complete (i.e. not require any other equipment).

Inside the tubing is a spiral-shaped thermal element that, because of its shape, allows the fluids to be warmed evenly. The configuration and pattern of the tubes also means that fluids flow more evenly and with less force than the body’s cardiovascular system, and much less than any other infusion fluid heater. Because of the unique configurations, red blood cells are less likely to be damaged, and because of other components – like a 400g battery – the complete system can be used almost anywhere.

Are you developing a new product or process? Did you know your R&D experiments could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
