Delaware Patent of the Month – August 2021

Heavy blood flow wounds are difficult to treat in the best of times, and even more so in combat situations. Improvements have been made in prevention, using better body armor to reduce mortality, but these are quite limited to protecting the torso. Mortality rates from injuries to arms, legs, and extremities are still high. The groin, pelvis, and abdomen are particularly fragile areas, unable to be treated with tourniquets or properly protected. Legionarius, LLC. has designed a way to limit this hemorrhaging which is convenient for combat scenarios.

Their design is a form of bandage with a wound sealant and inflatable balloons/bladders. It’s easily integrated into the clothes worn by soldiers and can be automatically or manually triggered. Once triggered, it delivers wound sealant to the impact site and applies pressure by selective inflation of balloons over the exsanguinated blood vessels. The combination of therapies helps slow or even stop the bleeding. Automatic triggering is induced when pressure sensitive layers sense a major impact or penetration. Innovations like these can be further expanded to non combat situations, where medical attention might still be slow to reach you. For instance, a diver who is unfortunately bit by a shark may need rapid attention to limit blood loss to prevent drowning. Limiting blood loss in this way gives the injured a greater chance at survival in any situation.
