Delaware Patent of the Month – January 2024

Clarifai, Inc, a pioneer in artificial intelligence-based technologies, introduces a novel computer-implemented method for visual searches. This innovation promises to redefine how we explore and retrieve visually similar images, overcoming the challenges associated with different domains and enhancing the accuracy of search results.

From facial recognition to snap and search mobile apps, the accuracy of a visual search can be the difference between a seamless tool and constant frustration. Clarifai’s solution uses a sophisticated classification model to generate predictions about the clusters in which the input image may be grouped. These predictions come with a representation of accuracy, indicating the relevance of each predicted cluster to the input image.

What sets Clarifai’s invention apart is its automated selection of a visual search application tailored to the predicted cluster with the highest relevance. This dynamic selection ensures that the search process is optimized for the specific characteristics of the input image, allowing for a more focused and accurate retrieval of visually similar results.

The model is trained on clusters created by extracting features from a base model and clustering these features into unique groups. This training process enhances the model’s ability to classify and predict accurately across diverse datasets.

The method introduces a cascaded approach, enabling the model to generate predictions for multiple clusters. This feature ensures that the search process remains robust, considering various potential groupings for the input image and delivering a comprehensive set of visually similar results.

The output of the visual search includes confidence scores for each result, allowing users to gauge the reliability of the suggested matches. Results are ranked based on these confidence scores, presenting the user with the most similar result prominently.

Clarifai has been on a mission since 2013 to bring AI to developers everywhere. The company has been a market leader since winning the top five places in image classification at the ImageNet 2013 competition and being named a leader in Forrester’s 2019 New Wave Computer Vision Platforms report. Clarifai’s platform supports the full AI development lifecycle; including dataset preparation, model training and deployment.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
