Delaware Patent of the Month – October 2022

Wobbleworks, Inc. (3Doodler) has recently patented their 3D pen which enables anyone to write or draw 3D creations into existence. This achievement has come after years of R&D, from a handmade prototype in a Massachusetts maker space, to one of the most successful Kickstarter projects of all time.

This handheld 3D printer is easily refillable and requires no computerized design files. The pen uses an actuator and a nozzle assembly to controllably release the 3D printing plastic medium. The pen has a cooling port and a fan to thermally control the plastic material and prevent the pen from overheating. When the actuator is engaged, the plastic material is fed through the nozzle. From here, just like any industrial 3D printer, you build your creation layer by layer. The maneuverability of the pen allows for even more creativity though, as lines can be built freehand without requiring a flat surface to build from.

The company is set on bringing creativity to everyone but not at the cost of user or environmental health. The plastic has low melting temperatures, making them safe for kids, and certified compostable and recyclable.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
