Idaho Patent of the Month – March 2022

Swimming like a mermaid or a dolphin is a rite of passage for all young kids – and even adults. By keeping your feet together while you propel yourselves forward, you’re actually engaging a different range of muscles and exploring different exercises. Blue Springs Partners, LLC is all about promoting creativity and active play in safe and fun ways. So, they decided to make it easier to pretend to be a mermaid.

They have designed a monofin which does what no other monofin does – function comfortably. The issue with existing monofins is they are either comfortable or functional, but not both. A flexible material is more comfortable but provides minimal propulsion force when used. A more rigid material will propel you further but is not comfortable for use longer than a few minutes. Blue Springs Partners’ design uses a series of folding ribs along the monofin to achieve both rigidity and flexibility. The ribs allow for different materials to be used with more flexible material around the foot and more rigid material further out into the fin. The placement of the ribs and division of material can be altered to make “advanced” or “novice” fins, providing either an easier or more intensive workout for the user.
