Indiana Patent of the Month – May 2024

Nextremity Solutions, Inc., now part of the Medartis family, has recently been granted a patent for their torque limiting ratcheting handle. This particular tool is designed to bring greater control and grip to surgeons.

Traditional disposable handles for surgical instruments often come with limitations and high costs. This invention addresses these challenges by providing a quick disconnect handle that allows for clockwise and counterclockwise ratcheting while limiting torque in one direction. This feature significantly enhances the ease of use and effectiveness of the surgical tool.

The apparatus comprises a ratchet shifter with a through-hole, a tool connector with a tool engagement body and mounting post, a torque coupler with radially outward fingers and teeth, and a rear power housing with a drive shaft and cavity. Together, these components form a robust system that enables precise control over the application of torque during surgical procedures.

One of the key advantages of this invention is its ability to streamline surgical operations. With the two-way ratcheting mechanism, surgeons can seat the driver once and freely spin in both directions, eliminating the need for constant reseating. This feature significantly reduces the time required for surgical procedures and minimizes the risk of errors.

The rear power housing of the apparatus is removable and attachable to various handle grips, offering flexibility and customization according to user preferences. Whether it’s a T-handle, pistol grip, or palm handle, the handle grip options cater to different ergonomic needs, ensuring comfort and ease of use for the surgeon.
