Kansas Patent of the Month – September 2022

Railroad transportation systems are essential to transport goods and persons across vast distances. While it is necessary for trains to cross roads or paths to reach their destinations, railroad crossings pose a danger to drivers and pedestrians. Detection systems to notify individuals of an oncoming train are not error-proof, may require lots of maintenance, and may not detect pedestrians or slight movements, which could lead to accidents.

The Island Radar Company is determined to provide innovative detection systems to keep trains and cars out of harm’s way. Typical safety measures like gates, lights, bells, signs, and  train horns may not be enough to prevent accidents from occurring. The Island Radar Company implements innovative broad-zone radar detection to create safer crossings.

This new technology consists of processor-based wireless sensor nodes that can detect the presence of trains, cars, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. Their beam designs surround the railroad crossing and provide a 360° view of the area, allowing precise detection and tracking of objects. Dual sensors provide redundant vehicle detection making it fail-safe and highly reliable. Their development detects trains faster and gives vehicles warnings far ahead of time to facilitate clearance of vehicles prior to the train approaching. Their sensor units are non-intrusive, easy-to-install, and require little maintenance, making this the best option for a safe and well-designed railroad crossing.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
