Kentucky Patent of the Month – June 2021

In some healthcare scenarios, patients require the temporary placement of tubes within the GI tract or respiratory tract. These tubes can have a variety of functions, from delivering nutrition or air to providing suction for removal. There are a variety of ways to guide these tubes into place, including x-ray fluoroscopy. Unfortunately each method has its own limitations. Werd, LLC. has designed a system to facilitate the placement of these temporary tubes.

The tubes are equipped with a camera at the distal end, with fiber optic filaments throughout. The cables provide a source of LED light. The camera is removable after placement, to allow the tube to function as needed. A steering component is also set in the lumen of the tube and removable after insertion. This helps to stiffen and guide the tube as needed. There are some temporary tubes that utilize cameras to help guide placement. Werd, LLC has designed a way to overcome their key limitation. These camera views can be completely obscured by mucous or other bodily materials. Werd, LLC uses a fluid irrigation channel within the tube and camera system to clear the blockage off of the screen. This fluid could include saline solutions, or any other fluid that is safe in the area of insertion. This improved insertion system makes it easier to guide temporary tubes without accidental damage or issue.
