Louisiana Patent of the Month – December 2022

Haptic feedback is a great way to build immersion in a game. It also offers a more realistic aspect to training simulations. Haptech, Inc. (DBA Haptech Defense Systems) is using haptic technology to put reality back into virtual combat training. Their patented Electromagnetic Recoil System (ERS) uses a fully surrogate weapon to replicate the recoil of firing a firearm.

The company has recently been granted a patent for their haptic systems which use linear motors and controllers to simulate haptic feedback. By using the linear motor, it produces a linear force rather than torque. The design achieves free recoil after simulating shooting the gun. Data regarding the simulated gun type and ammunition type influences the degree of haptic feedback. For instance, a higher weight bullet or a greater amount of gunpowder used will impact the recoil. The linear motor also controls the dynamic movement of a sliding mass, allowing it to replicate multiple during cycles for more automated gun types.

Their technology goes beyond simulating the recoil of firing a weapon. When combined with the full suite of sensored simulators, they produce feedback on all touchpoints, including the trigger, magazine release, bolt catch, selector switch, and charging handle. By safely replicating these details in simulated environments, Haptech is helping to facilitate the growth and progress of soldiers, evaluate for battle readiness, and enable unprecedented After Action Review.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
