Massachusetts Patent of the Month – December 2020

Since the creation of the World Wide Web in 1993, computers have become a household item. They’ve also become increasingly used in business and software creation. With the increase in computer and digital information creation and storage, attacks on personal and business information have become more complex to battle. Hackers and viruses are a common occurance now and are often hard to combat as they become more and more complex. Additionally, usually a cyber-attack happens before a victim has a chance to defend themselves. In result, the victim has to repair the damage afterwards. Charles River Analytics, Inc. wanted to change this, so users can be better prepared for an attack in advance. So, the company developed a Predictive Malware Defense (PMD).

The PMD involves machine-learning to predict cyber-attacks and create malware defenses. Models are created from malware family features and the PMD can use them to predict malware evolution, acting as a malware vaccine to not only defend against existing malware, but future ones as well. The PMD predictions can be added to machine-learning malware detection to train it to detect new evolutions as they pop up. Individuals and businesses can pre-emptively protect their valuable information rather than picking up the pieces of a cyber-attack.

Are you adapting existing technology for a new application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
